Excessive dieting, fasting, skipping meals, and exercising on an empty stomach can worsen conditions of hypoglycemia. Doctors can miss these factors when diagnosing the cause of headaches and migraines. Up to one-third of people have an aura before a migraine headache. A migraine is a short period (less than 50 minutes) of visual disturbance(s) that signals that the migraine headache will soon occur. Nausea and vomiting may occur and in severe cases the victim is sensitive to light and sounds, and wants to withdraw to a quiet, dark room -- motivated to shorten the migraine and not have the migraine recur. The severe pain is usually followed by pain that reminds the person that damage occurred. For about two days following the migraine, the patient may experience ongoing minor pain, especially when the patient bends forward — as if the brain or blood volume affected by the weight of gravity causes aggravation of inflamed tissue following the migraine attack.

Migraines can be avoided by making sure severe or prolonged periods of hypoglycemia don't occur. Scientists are not sure what causes migraines, but it may be related to genetics, hypoglycemia and a variety of environmental factors — such as  ...
